A teenager stabbed with a samurai sword is recovering in hospital following a West Auckland party's descent into violence.

Several carloads of gatecrashers arrived at the party in the suburb of Massey on Saturday night. They were met by partygoers carrying weapons including slabs of wood and decorative samurai swords.

"During the fight the man was stabbed with the sword just below the neck, where it has punctured his right lung,' says Det Snr Sgt James Bothamley.

The 18-year-old victim was taken to hospital, where he remains.

Police are making enquiries, but say people on both sides of the brawl are reluctant to talk.
