Whakatane balcony fall leaves man critical

A man who plummeted to the ground from the balcony of a Whakatane hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning remains in a critical condition.

The man, who fell from the first floor of the Craic Hotel at about 3:30am, is said to have suffered "serious injuries" as a result and is now in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit.

Whakatane Police say the man is in a "critical but stable condition", and are now investigating how the incident took place.

"We are very grateful to the local community, who have provided valuable information which has allowed us to progress this investigation in a positive manner," Eastern Bay of Plenty Detective Sergeant Darren Thomas said.

Police are now looking for information from anyone who may have seen or heard about the incident.
