It rained less than normal in Auckland last year, but Wellington was drenched by rainfall 20 percent higher than normal.
The National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research has released its annual climate summary.
The warmest areas were Whangaparaoa, Whangarei and Kaitaia in the north.
NIWA Principal Scientist Dr James Renwick says sunshine was spread across the country.
Whakatane recorded more than 2500 hours of sunshine in 2010.
