Rescued Whanganui woman dies

An elderly woman who was saved from her burning Whanganui home last night has died in hospital.

The Fire Service was called to the Heads Rd house in Gonville by the woman as well as a number of neighbours around 9:30pm.

Police and ambulance were also told of the fire because the Fire Service was treating the incident as if there was someone inside the house.

Initially, two fire engines responded to the fire but two more were later sent.

The woman, in her 70s, was found inside around 9:47pm and brought outside where firefighters performed CPR on her.

She was then taken to Whanganui Hospital by ambulance, but she has since died.

One of the firefighters received minor injuries.

A Fire Service spokesman said the fire was fully involved when they arrived, but was brought under control around 10:20pm.

He did not know where the woman was found inside the house.

The cause is still being investigated.
