Whangarei sushi workers reunited with $71k holiday pay

Dozens of migrant workers at Whangarei sushi bars have been reunited with more than $71,000 worth of unpaid holiday pay.

An investigation by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment found 54 current and former Korean employees at eight stores were affected.

They discovered serious breaches of employment laws, including failure to keep time and wage records, provide employment agreements and pay minimum wages, says labour inspectorate regional manager Kevin Finnegan.

Six businesses were served improvement notices, one was closed and another has been referred to the Employment Relations Authority for penalties.

Two businesses were required to pay arrears as high as $25,460 and $28,758.
