An Auckland mother who caused a crash while under the influence of methamphetamine which killed her 12-year-old daughter has avoided a jail sentence.

Toni Ericksen, 33, was sentenced in Auckland District Court on Friday to 12 months' home detention after admitting four charges relating to the crash in July last year which killed her daughter Bryer Greenwood.

Her eight-year-old daughter Gemma was also injured, as was a pregnant woman in the other vehicle.

Ericksen pleaded guilty in August, just before she was due to stand trial, to charges of driving while under the influence of drugs, causing a crash which killed Bryer, causing a crash which injured Gemma and the other woman, and driving while unlicensed.

Though he said he was hesitant to give a non-custodial sentence, Judge Roy Wade told the court a jail term would have an extremely negative impact on Gemma, APNZ reported.
