Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman claims she was sexually violated and punched in the face on an Air New Zealand flight.

The woman, who can't be named, posted on Facebook saying a man stuck a hand down her top and punched her in the face on her Sydney to Auckland flight.

She has reported the incident to the police, who are investigating the incident.

Air NZ has responded, saying it is a police matter, and they will not comment further.

"What we can say from a general perspective is that if an incident of this nature is reported on-board one of our aircraft, we generally arrange for one of the parties to be re-seated to establish clear separation, arrange for police to meet the aircraft on arrival, and hand over the matter for the Police to manage from there," a spokesperson says.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident or has more information to contact Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
