Woman falls for 'Auckland District Council' scam

An Auckland woman has fallen victim to a scammer pretending to be from the "Auckland District Council".

No such organisation exists, and the real Auckland Council is warning residents to be wary.

The scammer asked the woman for her bank details so she could pay an infringement notice, says Auckland Council investigation adviser Maureen Glassey.

The woman gave the caller her bank details, and later found they'd taken $150 out via direct debit.

"We strongly advise that no one gives out their bank account details over the phone to anyone, regardless of where they say they are from," says Ms Glassey.

"If anyone receives a call of this nature, we would urge them to record the number it comes from, if that's possible, and pass the details onto the police."

She says Auckland Council, nor Auckland Transport, Watercare or any other council-controlled organisations, would call people and ask for their bank details.
