Woman sentenced for stealing $100k to gamble

A 71-year-old woman has been sentenced to five months' home detention for stealing $100,000 from an intellectually disabled woman, whom she had the power of attorney of.

The woman, who was granted permanent name suppression, made 450 fradulent transactions from the victim's account between 2009 and 2015, using the money to fund a gambling habit.

Judge John Strettell described the offending as "an astonishingly reprehensible act and a gross breach of trust".

He also ordered the woman to pay $61,000 in reparations to the victim.
