Wellington Zoo has lost one of its best-loved attractions.

Nippy, the world's oldest gibbon has died at the age of almost 60.

3 News was at Nippy's 50th birthday in 1999. He arrived at the zoo as a one-year-old in 1949.

Zoo staff had to euthanise Nippy after his health rapidly deteriorated.

His mind still appeared sharp, but his body had given up.

Gibbons in the wild rarely live beyond 40, making Nippy easily the world's oldest known.
