Life's little problems are in the process of being solved by the next generation of designers.

An international competition led by the inventor of Dyson vacuum cleaners is looking to encourage and foster ingenuity.

Budding young designers, along with their prototypes, are the finalists in the New Zealand James Dyson awards and the judges admit finding a winner is getting harder each year.

The international winner will be announced in November.
