Opinion: Greg King - A superb man

So much has been and will be written about the sudden death of Greg King. He was a superb, kind, compassionate, smart and quite frankly brilliant New Zealander.

I dealt with him both professionally and personally on numerous occasions - like many New Zealand journalists have done over the years.

His rapport with the media was second to none. He was never, ever, aloof - he was so grounded and always gave his time generously.

I sat with him at Shane Cameron's last boxing bout in Auckland, indeed we travelled up together and spent the evening at a sport he clearly loved and knew a lot about.

It was just two days after the Ewen Macdonald verdict and he was very much in the public eye.

We talked at length about the trial and the result. He was neither boastful nor did he back down from what he did as a job. Public reaction to what he did, did not appear to have much of an impact on him at all.

He just said he was doing his job. He cared deeply for victims and their families too.

I am immensely sad at his passing - my heart goes out to his family, he was not only a great New Zealander - but a great guy.
