Today was Brendan Horan’s first day in Parliament as an independent MP, and it was a day of defiance.
The former TV weatherman is now seated in what's been nicknamed Siberia - the outer reaches of the debating chamber – and from his new seat he interrupted his former leader Winston Peters and grilled Prime Minister John Key about Chinese immigration.
“Does the Prime Minister agree that natural justice and due process are relevant [parts] of the Immigration Act?” he asked.
“When there's 171,000 people coming that's really challenging, but when it's one of eight you think you'd get it right,” said Mr Key.
Mr Horan's also furious his phone records were provided to media, showing he made 144 calls to the TAB over a 10-month period.
“Clearly they've been leaked, clearly I want them back,” said Mr Horan.
He had given a copy to Winston Peters just days earlier, but Mr Peters claims he has no idea where the leaked copy came from.
Mr Horan is now considering a complaint to the Privacy Commissioner.
