Same-sex couples will be able to marry in New Zealand from August 19, after the marriage amendment act received royal assent.

That's the last official phase the bill must go through before it comes into law, after passing it's third reading with 77 votes to 44 last week.

The Department of Internal Affairs is introducing new marriage forms for all couples who want to get married.

The department will use the time between now and August 19 to switch over the marriage forms, alter computer systems and inform celebrants of the changes.
