Unrest has broken out at an anti-Donald Trump rally in Auckland's Aotea Square on Saturday afternoon.

The protest started peacefully, with around 40 people holding signs denouncing Mr Trump's election as president.

The protesters held signs saying "f*ck Trump, stand with Muslims", "stand for climate justice", "stand for Standing Rock" and "black lives matter".

Things soon turned ugly though when a Trump supporter with a loud hailer turned up, denouncing the protest as "undemocratic".

The opposing groups faced off, pushing and shoving each other and shouting.

Police arrived on the scene to contain the protest.
