Farmers are welcoming changes to the rules covering agricultural vehicles and say they will save the industry $51 million a year.

Farm vehicles operating below 40km/h won't need warrants of fitness and farmers who hold car licences will be able to drive a wider range of agricultural vehicles, the Government said on Wednesday.

Federated Farmers says they are commonsense measures.

"These changes will make compliance on agricultural vehicles straightforward and easy to understand," the federation's transport spokesman Ian Mackenzie said.

Associate Transport Minister Simon Bridges says the rule changes will come into force during the first half of next year.
