Govt continues review into dog control laws

The Government is asking the public for their feedback into a review on the country's dog control laws in a bid to reduce the 10,000 reported injuries a year.

Associate Local Government Minister Louise Upston announced the review earlier this year, and says "responsible dog owners have nothing to fear".

The NZ Institute of Animal Control Officers says ACC deals with more than 10,000 dog bite claims a year, but not all bites need medical attention.

They say the actual figure could be double what's reported to ACC.

Ms Upston has met with those who've had first-hand experience with dog attacks, and is also seeking the thoughts of councils and dog control officers.

"I thank those who shared their personal experiences with me and commend them on their courage," Ms Upston said.

"While I realise we can't prevent dog attacks completely, I am committed to ensuring that our laws go as far as they can in reducing the risk and harm."

The public can have their say online from August 1 to 12.
