One hundred people have taken up the government's $5000 cash offer to move out of state houses in the Auckland region.

Social housing minister Paula Bennett says of those 45 had moved out of state houses in Auckland into private rentals elsewhere in the country.

The scheme got off to a slow start with just 12 families taking it up after the first month - one of which was homeless.

But with the numbers closing in on the 150 places funded, the Minister is pleased.

"It's been really successful for so many making a big difference," she told Newshub.

And once the initial funding for 150 has dried up - the Minister says she'll likely be knocking on the finance minister's door for more.
