Only 14 votes separated the leading Hamilton mayoral candidates on election day, and nine when the preliminary result was announced.

That's now shrunk again, with Hamilton City Council on Friday evening announcing Andrew King's margin of victory over Paula Southgate was only six votes - 8726 to 8720.

That's 0.068 percent.

"Thanks for hanging in there with me," Mr King wrote on his Facebook page. "It's time to go and sit in the mayor's chair for the first time!"

Ms Southgate was philosophical in defeat.

"Ah well, I made a good run at it," she posted on her Facebook page. "I found out via Andrew's Facebook page! That's life with social media!"

The recount didn't cost ratepayers a dime, as it was covered by insurance.
