Key: Govt working on 'Google tax'

John Key has revealed tax officials are working on a Kiwi version of the "Google tax", amid concerns Google and Facebook are avoiding paying tax in New Zealand.

Asked about Australia's Google tax, the Prime Minister said: "we are effectively working on our own model of that if you like. There's further work that's being done".

As global operators, Facebook and Google pay very little tax on the money they make in New Zealand.

The UK has managed to talk Google into paying $130 million. France is planning a levy on Google ads, while the Aussies are threatening 120 percent penalty fees. But Mr Key said New Zealand would take its time and work with the OECD to bring the model into place.
