Critics have called the New Zealand Olympic team's uniforms for Rio a "disappointment" and say they have "no sex", but Prime Minister and one-time fashion model John Key isn't having any of it.

The Shane Hansen-designed uniforms were revealed yesterday, and are mostly black with splashes of silver, green and blue.

Steve Dunstan of fashion label Huffer criticised the fit, saying he hoped for a more "progressive and innovative" kit, while stylist Angela Stone said "they haven't even tried" to be fashionable.

Mr Key infamously modelled the Rugby World Cup volunteers' outfit in 2011, strutting his stuff on the catwalk.

"I've got an international reputation!" he joked on More FM this morning.

"I thought they looked pretty good, actually," he said about the new Olympic outfits. "Those athletes are in such amazing shape they'll look great in anything."

"I don't really read comments online, but I saw a picture of them on one of the websites...and I saw those [disparaging] comments," said Mr Key.

"They're there to be great athletes, not fashion models."

He's backing them to be our best Olympic team ever and beat the 13-medal haul from London in 2012.
