Labour's annual conference gets under way in Auckland later today with the current and future direction set to come under the spotlight.

An intense bout of blogger speculation about David Shearer's suitability as Labour leader means his keynote speech on Sunday will be scrutinised closely.

Mr Shearer says he's looking forward to setting out his vision - particularly Labour's strategies to get involved with economic growth.

“What does it need to do? It needs to get hands on and it needs to grow the economy it needs to grow jobs and it has to do that by actively getting behind businesses, companies to grow those jobs.”

An announcement around Kiwisaver is also expected - and there'll be a vote on whether members and unions should have a say in who leads the party.
