Labour up, but not enough for power - Poll

The Labour Party would make significant gains in the House – at the expense of New Zealand First and ACT – if an election were held tomorrow, according to the latest 3 News Reid Research poll.

However results show Labour and the Green Party still won't have the numbers to form a government on their own.

Converted into seats, the numbers indicate National would hold 60 seats in the 121-seat parliament, while Labour would hold 42 and the Greens 14.

New Zealand First would be decimated and lose all of their current eight seats, while ACT would lose their single seat.

The figures are based on a situation where United Future and Mana each win one electorate seat and the Maori Party wins two, while ACT loses its Epsom seat.

Meanwhile, John Key remains the preferred Prime Minister with 40.9 percent support, but that number has dropped from 42 percent in July's 3 News Reid Research poll.

But he's still well ahead of new Labour leader David Cunliffe on 10.8 percent, who sat at 1.4 percent in July before he became leader.

NZ First leader Winston Peters came in third with 7.5 percent, while Greens co-leader Russel Norman sits on just 2.2 percent.

Polling was done between November 3 and 7 and was based on 1000 eligible voters.

The poll had a sample error of a maximum of 3.1 percent expressed at a 95 percent confidence level.
