Labour MP Charles Chauvel has quit Parliament today after accepting a job with the United Nations.

Mr Chauvel, a list MP from Ohariu, will have his final day at Parliament on March 11.

His job with the UN involves being an advisor on Parliamentary Development and Democratic Governance.

Mr Chauvel, a lawyer and same-sex marriage campaigner, entered Parliament in 2006.

“This new full-time role with the UN presents a similar opportunity to make a difference and I look forward to the challenges that it will present,” he says.

Next in line on Labour's list is Carol Beaumont.

The new position is based in New York.
