'Nervous' wait for Carmel Sepuloni

Labour's Carmel Sepuloni is hopeful this year's result goes better than that of 2011.

The Kelston candidate lost her electorate by a mere nine votes last election to National's Paula Bennett and says she's nervous of the thought of a similar predicament happening again.

"At the moment I'm really nervous," she says. "[But I'm] relieved in some ways the campaign's out of the way, we did all we did, we can't do anymore.

"It's been a long, hard campaign; we've had a long, hard day."

After giving it all, Ms Sepuloni is hoping for a solid victory this time around, even if Labour doesn't fare so well on the party vote.

"I'm hoping that we win, of course, and that it's a margin big enough that we don't have to go through the special votes and a judicial recount again, because that's pretty gruelling.

"After last time I just won't believe that we have won until those results have come through."

She said questions about Mr Cunliffe's leadership if Labour failed to do well weren't valid.

"I don't think that's even being questioned by anyone at the moment. I think everyone would acknowledge that he's doing a really good job of leading us up to this election and respects him for the job he's done."

Addressing the crowd, Ms Sepuloni received rapturous applause and told supporters it was a "privilege" to run for Kelston.

"In the last election we nearly won because of the workers on the ground. Today I believe that we're going to get a good result but it's not because of me; it's because of each and every one of you."
