Nick Smith dodges questions on scathing environment report

Environment Minister Nick Smith is refusing to discuss a report by the Parliamentary Environment Commissioner that urges the Government take a tougher stance on the agricultural sector's effect on the environment.

The report by Dr Jan Wright looked at biological gases from farms and whether enough was being done to curb them.

It gives a self-described "reality check" for the Government to tackle agricultural emissions in the wake of the ratification of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Dr Smith says it's not for him to comment on the findings, saying it's the responsibility of Climate Change Minister Paula Bennett and has nothing to do with his portfolio.

"You would need to put questions of government policy to her," he says.

When asked if he would comment on whether agriculture needs to start pulling its weight, Nick Smith refused saying that was a question for the Climate Change Minister.

"There is nothing new about climate change being a separate minister from the Minister for the Environment and you need to put questions around government policy to that minister," says Dr Smith.
