Labour says it's time New Zealand cracked down on the illegal fishing happening in the Pacific.

A damning report shows over 300,000 tonnes of tuna, nearly a billion dollars-worth, was caught illegally in the Pacific in just two years.

Labour MP Rino Tirikatene says it's time other Pacific countries did their bit.

"Our government continues to pour in millions of development dollars to these Pacific states, and yet we have the same exploitation going on," he says.

There's a risk a new marine sanctuary at the Kermadec Islands could become a "bonanza" for illegal fishing, Mr Tirikatene says.
