New Zealand politicians have taken to social media to share their take on the shocking US election result.

As it looked more and more likely Mr Trump would take home the victory, Labour Party rising star Jacinda Ardern took to Facebook, writing her faith in humanity had been shaken.

Greens co-leader James Shaw only needed three words to sum up his feelings on the result.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters said the victory showed the US was "sending the establishment a message", as the UK did with Brexit. He predicted New Zealand would soon see that same sentiment.

Mr Peters told Story the US "had a revolution" today.

"Americans are right. They know that Washington is controlled by the elites," Mr Peters said.

"This is the day when the most powerful people in democracy stand up - they're called voters. That's what democracy's about."

Labour's Kelvin Davis tweeted that he hoped this didn't mean the end of the world.

Prime Minister John Key congratulated Mr Trump on his victory, saying he'll be looking to build close ties with the new administration.

"The American people have spoken and I congratulate Mr Trump on his victory after a long campaign," Mr Key said in a statement on Wednesday night.

"I will be writing to Mr Trump to offer my personal congratulations shortly."

The Prime Minister's son saw the lighter side of things.
