Education Minister Hekia Parata is in Christchurch today to meet with the principals of the 31 schools facing closure or a merger later this month.

Her announcement is expected on the 18th and the New Zealand Educational Institute has already planned strike action for the day after.

Ms Parata isn't concerned by the plans.

“That’s a matter for the NZEI, but I do want to assure all of the community that we have been keen to listen to all parts of the community. That’s been parents and principals and teachers,” she says.

A further announcement is planned for later in the year for five schools based in the Aranui suburb.
