Poll shows Labour drop again

The Labour Party's internal troubles have seen it drop again in the latest 3 News/Reid Research poll, with Prime Minister John Key and National clear winners and able to govern alone.

Labour's so-called "man-ban" got leader David Shearer plenty of attention, for all the wrong reasons.

And it's got Labour going the wrong way on this poll – down, a drop of 2.1 percent.

"It's a wake up call for us," says Mr Shearer. "People want us to be focussed on them and not on Labour Party internal matters."

"The Labour Party is focussed on the Labour Party and National is focussed on the country," says Mr Key.

There have been questions about Mr Shearer's leadership. One Labour MP told 3 News Mr Shearer has until spring, two months, to improve the polls or he could be gone by the end of year.

"My mission is to lead Labour to victory in 2014," says Mr Shearer.

But as preferred Prime Minister, once again Mr Key is well and truly on top, with 42 percent wanting Mr Key in charge. That's up 1.3 percent.

Mr Shearer is way back on 12.1 percent, although he has gone up 1.6 percent.

When we asked how the leaders are performing, Mr Shearer took a hit. Only 26.1 percent say he's performing well. That's down a massive 10.1 percent. And 43.3 percent say he's doing a poor job. That's up 7 percent.

"We need to talk about the issues that people want us to talk about," says Mr Shearer. "It's about the affordability of electricity. It's about the affordability of homes."

As for Mr Key, 52 percent say he's doing well. That's down 3 percent. And 32.2 percent say he's doing a poor job – up 1.9 percent.

"The Labour Party is just totally consumed with itself, and while it continues to be like that it won't be much of an opposition," says Mr Key.

And a Labour-Greens alliance is shut out yet again.

"We're doing okay, but I'd like us to do better, and whether David Shearer is the right person for Labour, that's Labour's question, not ours," says Green Party co-leader Russel Norman.

So, Labour is caught in a downward poll and spring is getting closer by the day.
