Protesters 'hijacked' Big Gay Out -- John Key

Prime Minister John Key says the group of people who booed him off stage at Auckland's Big Gay Out yesterday 'hijacked' the event for their own purposes.

Mr Key was booed and glitter-bombed by anti-TPP protesters at the event, forcing him off the stage in a minute into his speech.

"Gay and lesbian rights activists have worked really hard, campaigned hard for an extension of their rights over the year and I voted for gay marriage, and actually yesterday on the ground the feeling was stronger than any other time I've been there," Mr Key told the Paul Henry programme this morning.

"In fact, actually after I got off the stage so many of them came up to me and said 'this is a disgrace we hate these people'."

He says the vocal group ruined it for the rest of the people at the event.

"They were hijacked by a really small group, wearing Mana T-shirts and Green Party badges and all this sort of stuff, a big banner that was held behind them had the Green Party logo, and they're people hijacking a fun day out for people as they're trying to celebrate their sexuality.

"At the end of the day these guys are going to come to everything I go to 'til the end of 2016. That's the way it goes."
