A no-fly zone will be enforced over central Auckland for the entire visit of US Vice President Joe Biden.

Even rescue helicopters won't be exempt from the security clamp down.

Air Force Two will touch down at Auckland International Airport with Mr Biden around 6pm on Wednesday before he's whisked away to the central city.

His security will be among the tightest ever seen in New Zealand with the Civil Aviation Authority requiring all aircraft to stay out of the air space above the heart of the city.

The zone includes Auckland and Starship Hospitals - meaning rescue helicopters need sign off by authorities before heading out on life-saving missions, or returning from one.

It also includes the heliport at Mechanics Bay on Auckland's waterfront.
