The Law and Order select committee has sided with the family of murdered North Shore teenager Christie Marceau, who want stricter bail laws.

It has recommended police be allowed to oppose bail at the High Court, and judges who rule on bail should be the ones who continue to deal with the case.

Ms Marceau was killed two years ago by 19-year-old Akshay Chand, who was found not guilty of her murder by reason of insanity.

He was however, sent to prison for three years for kidnapping Ms Marceau and threatening her with a knife two months before her death.

Chand was on bail when for those charges when he killed her.

Ms Marceau's death sparked a petition and protest for stricter bail laws with more than 60,000 signatures. It was delivered to Parliament last year.
