Just when National thought dildogate had been resigned to history, another sex-toy themed gaffe has struck the party.

Four singers in giant pink phallus costumes greeted Prime Minister John Key on arrival in Whangarei, where he's turning the sod for a new Hundervasser museum project

The choir belted out a re-worded version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' from a boat floating in the harbour nearby, targeting National's regional economic policies - or the lack thereof.

It comes five weeks after National's Steven Joyce was hit in the face with a dildo in Waitangi, footage of which went global.

Around 70 locals attended today's event, part of Mr Key's tour of the region, including a school visit and opening a new refinery at Northport.

Ten uniformed police and a handful of undercover officers attended, in addition to the Prime Minister's diplomatic protection squad.

Before the event officers grew suspicious of activity on the boat, making numerous visits to see what was going on.

New Zealand First leader and Northland MP Winston Peters says the protest is just a small sample of the region's anger at National's economic neglect, especially when it comes to roading and rail.
