Auckland church St-Matthew-in-the-City is erecting a new billboard which tackles the marriage equality issue currently being debated by politicians and the public.

The billboard depicts a wedding cake with two women on top, in place of the traditional figurines of a man and a woman.

Text on the cake’s side indicates support for the proposed change in marriage legislation, reading: “We don’t care who’s on top.”

It’s the latest in a series of topical, and at times controversial, billboards featured outside the central city church.

In March, for Easter, the church unveiled a billboard showing a Facebook photo of the Crucifixion, “liked” by Judas Iscariot.

Another billboard, showing the Virgin Mary shocked at a positive pregnancy test, was erected at Christmas last year.

The Marriage Amendment Bill, submitted by Labour MP Louisa Wall, faces its first reading in Parliament today.

If passed into law it will allow same-sex couples to marry with the same rights as heterosexual couples.
