Former world squash champion Dame Susan Devoy has been named the new Race Relations Commissioner.
Her five-year term, which begins on April 1, was announced by Justice Minister Judith Collins today.
Ms Collins described Dame Susan as "a proud New Zealander who is highly motivated to contribute positively to New Zealand society".
"Her communication and relationship management skills, coupled with experience working with diverse groups, are key areas of strength."
She says Dame Susan has governance experience and will be a sensible and intelligent voice in the Human Rights Commission.
Dame Susan replaces Joris de Bres, who recently concluded his second term in the office.
Dame Susan dominated world squash in the 1980s and early 1990s, and is a board member of the Sustainability Council and Halberg Trust.
