The Electoral Commission has cancelled the registration of the United Future party because it doesn't have the required membership of 500.

The registration was cancelled at the party's request, the commission said today.

United Future Party President Robin Gunston said the cancellation was a temporary move while members' details were updated.

“While we have well over the 500 members required under Section 71 A of the Electoral Act for a political party to be registered, there are inconsistencies in the party’s records around current addresses and the financial status of some of those members,” he said.

“We are certainly very confident that this will be sorted out and our registration restored, but it is about complying with both the letter and the spirit of the law."

If it is final it means that Peter Dunne couldn't run under the United Future banner during an election, but he can stay on at Parliament as an MP and provide that crucial vote to the government to pass legislation.

The party's leader Peter Dunne is its sole MP.
