Prime Minister John Key has labelled the Labour-led Opposition the "devil beast".

Mr Key made the remarks during his speech in the House today, following the delivery of his government's fifth Budget.

"This is a government that has delivered competitiveness to our economy. Mr Speaker," said Mr Key.

"This is where real jobs are delivered, where real growth takes place. Mr Speaker, it will be about National versus the devil beast.

"Mr Speaker, I know who I'll be voting for, and it won't be the devil beast."

The comment was met with a standing ovation from the Government side of the House, and vocal derision from the other.

A stony-faced David Carter struggled to restore sanity, loudly chanting "order!" a number of times, rising to his feet.

The devil beast is a fictional creature from the Star Wars universe. They lived on the planet Endor.

The Ewoks in Return of the Jedi called one of Endor's moons home, but the devil beasts have not made an appearance in any Star Wars movies to date.
