New Zealanders sky gazers were treated to a rare celestial sight today with the total eclipse of the sun.

At 10:21am this morning, up to 91 percent of the sun was covered by the moon.

Special pinhole cameras or viewing glasses were needed to observe the eclipse.

iWitness Kermath Davies sent 3 News photos of the eclipse over Cape Reinga, where the solar flares of the sun are clearly visible.

The rare sight will not be visible again until 2028.
