A scrub fire broke out near Christchurch International Airport this afternoon, sending plumes of smoke into the air and alarming some travellers.

The blaze started in a hedgerow at the nearby Harewood Golf Course at around 2:25pm. Firefighters have now brought the fire under control.

A spokesperson from the golf course says the fire took hold ‘very quickly’.

Onlooker Dustin Habeck, who was at the airport during the time of the blaze, told 3 News the smoke could be smelt through the air conditioning system.

However an airport representative said flights were not affected and the situation was under control.

There was no damage to the golf course which is expected to re-open tomorrow morning.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
