Surface flooding has been reported in several Christchurch suburbs this morning, following persistent heavy rain overnight.

Roads remain closed today along with one Christchurch school – Christ the King Catholic School on Greers Rd.

Several Christchurch suburbs have received surface flooding including Beckenham, New Brighton, Northwood, Burnside and Sumner.

One of the city's main roads, Fitzgerald Ave, has also been closed due to the chaotic weather.

"We ask that motorists please take extreme care when driving and are especially aware of pedestrians and cyclists," says Christchurch City Council's John Mackie.

"We would also remind road users that as a result of surface flooding, puddles forming may conceal potholes."

3 News iWitness Carlos Wilkie captured video of flooding at Northwood Boulevard on Niel Ave in Christchurch.

Civil Defence advises people not to drive unless absolutely necessary, as road conditions remain hazardous due to slips and debris.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for south Canterbury, north Otago and Dunedin. Up to 70mm of rain is expected up to 6pm.
