A massive, out-of-control scrub fire has destroyed several houses near Mosgiel in a series of fires in the South Island that are being fuelled by high temperatures and gale force winds.

A fire threatened the town of Dunback in North Otago this morning but the more serious blaze broke out this afternoon on the backroad between Dunedin and Mosgiel.

The Fire Service is still trying to contain the blaze, but winds of up to 100km/h and extremely low humidity are making for hard work.

Locals are being advised to stay vigilant, and those thinking they may need to evacuate should leave themselves plenty of time.
