Former New Zealand coach Ruth Aitken will take over the helm of Singapore netball next year.

Aitken has signed a one-year contract as Singapore national coach and technical director from August 2013, when her duties end as coach of the Auckland Diamonds in the trans-Tasman league.

The 56-year-old ended a 10-year stint as Silver Ferns coach last year and has since taken up a role as coaching director at Netball New Zealand (NNZ).

She said she was excited to continue coaching on the international stage, building on the work of compatriot Kate Carpenter, who is ending her second stint as Singapore coach this month for personal reasons.

Asian champions Singapore are ranked 18th in the world.

NNZ chief executive Raelene Castle praised the contribution of Aitken to the top level of the sport in New Zealand.

"Ruth is an exceptional coach and while NNZ will miss her coaching services we are very pleased to keep her coaching expertise on the international stage," Castle said.
