Veteran All Black Sevens' player DJ Forbes is confident that a medal is in the grasp of New Zealand if they can perform at their best.

With the likes of Ardie Savea, Beauden Barrett, Israel Dagg and Ben Smith turning down an opportunity to play in Rio there has been concern that the team may struggle to win given the inconsistent run of form during the 2016 World Series.

Forbes is in no doubt they have what it takes.

"A star team will always beat a team of stars," he said.

"When this team is on it is pretty hard to take us off track, I think when the buzz is going for us it's pretty hard going up against us."

The former captain is still coming to terms with being involved in an Olympic campaign.

"Never in my wildest dreams did i think rugby would be a pathway to make the Olympics."

"On the World Series we have Hong Kong as the pinnacle event and then we had the Commonwealth Games, but now it's fair to say in terms of any sort of sporting history, to be a part of an Olympic occasion a lot of kids would dream of being a part of it."

The Men's competition gets underway on August 10th (NZT).
