American basketballers show star power

By Lewis Hampton

It's not every day you get to ask Kevin Durant and Paul George a question.

The NBA superstars and global celebrities drew a massive crowd at the Olympic media centre yesterday, fronting hundreds of broadcasters from all around the world.

I've been to a lot of All Blacks media conferences but the hype around them paled in comparison to this.

After a short statement from team management, the players broke off for the media scrums, sitting on stages while crowds of journalists and cameramen 10 deep shouted questions, struggling to be heard over loud American broadcasters like ESPN and Fox.

The crowd surrounding Durant was simply too large for me to brave, so I made my way to Paul George and managed to sneak in a question.

I then noticed a few people slipping away from the towering figure of Durant, so I steeled myself and headed over.

After a Mexican journalist, I pretty much yelled my question and got what I was after.

It's not often you get one past a 210cm NBA superstar, but if you don't shoot, you'll never score.
