An exclusive drive around new Hampton Downs track

It's taken 12 years, but a swampy piece of farmland just north of Te Kauwhata is on the verge of becoming the North Island's top Motorsport venue.

The completed Hampton Downs International Circuit is one of New Zealand's fastest pieces of tarmac.

While it's been slow to arrive, Tony Quinn believes it's $38 million well spent.

"It's got a great future, probably the best future of any track in New Zealand because of the population nearby and it's a great product."

Newshub was given exclusive access around the track on Wednesday but even from the other side of the fence, it's getting the thumbs up.

"The people that jumped in early and bought apartments have been waiting and holding on," says Dave Sturrock.

"And for Tony to buy the place and do what he's doing is just outstanding."

The Australian-based Quinn plans to retire in New Zealand where he can keep a close eye on his two race tracks -- Cromwell's Highlands Park and Hampton Downs, which he wants to host New Zealand's most prestigious race.

"I would love to give the New Zealand Grand Prix the credibility and notoriety it deserves," he says.

But the track will officially reopen on October 28, with a 400km race featuring the Australian GTs.
