Australia coach Holger Osieck has taken some shine off his team's World Cup qualifying win over Jordan with a sexist jibe that "women should shut up in public" before his post-match news conference.
Osieck was taking his seat before addressing reporters Tuesday night following Australia's 4-0 win when he could be heard to jokingly accuse a Football Australia official of ordering him around.
The German-born coach said: "There is a saying it is a very ... women should shut up in public. I say it to my wife at home, it is a private one, OK."
Looking at the waiting media Osieck added: "And you record that one as well? I am going to be the darling of all Australian wives."
Football Federation Australia did not comment, but said Osieck would hold a news conference at Melbourne Airport on Wednesday before flying to Sydney to prepare for next week's group match against Iraq.
