Benji Marshall has reportedly signed a one-year deal to play with the Brisbane Broncos for the 2017 season.

The former Kiwis captain was left without a club after the St Geroge Illawarra Dragons decided not to renew his contract following a dismal 2016 season.

Earlier in the season, Marshall had turned down a deal from the Dragons which was reportedly around NZ$310,000 a season.

The 31-year old personally reached out to Broncos coach Wayne Bennett in hope he would give the chance to remain the NRL.

The pair formed a close bond when both were a part of the 2008 Kiwis side which won the Rugby League World Cup over Australia.

It's understood Marshall and his agent Mario Tartak flew to Brisbane this morning to sign the deal.

"He's looking forward to playing under Wayne Bennett at Brisbane, where he is confident he can get back to his best," said Tartak.

It is believed Marshall will serve mainly as a utility player for the Broncos, and also will fill in at centre and fullback when needed.

Marshall has played in 255 NRL games in his NRL career between the Wests Tigers and St George Dragons, along with 27 Tests for the Kiwis. He also had a short stint with the Blues Super Rugby team in 2014.
