Black Caps batting coach Craig McMillian weighed in on the debate between Test cricket and T20 cricket and why players a leaning towards the shorter form of the game.

Speaking on Radio Lives Sunday Sport program hosted by Andrew Gourdie and James McOnie, McMillian gave his thoughts on the issue.

"It's really difficult with all these T20 tournaments that pop up throughout the year and try fit things around these tournaments.

"I think with the amount of money involved with these T20 Tournaments around the world you'd be silly not to base your skill set around playing T20 cricket and that’s what we are finding with a lot of players coming through the grades."

McMillian also believes that test cricket is still the number one format of the game however they need to play more three test match series instead of playing two match series.

"There are too many two test match series and you get bad weather or you start slowly as we have on a number of tours and you lose a test and it makes it very difficult.

"Ideally moving forward you want to play more three match test series and it’s a better reflection on who the better side is."

McMillan who played in 55 tests for the Black Caps said that players are still judged by the way they play test cricket.

"For them playing the longer form of the game is difficult because the skill set between T20 cricket and Test cricket is huge and it takes a lot of time to get the balance right between the two formats.

"I still think when you talk to a lot of the players, they are judged and based on how they play and perform in test cricket."

The Black Caps have nine Test matches to play before the year is up against Zimbabwe, South Africa, India and Pakistan. The Black caps leave for their tour of Africa tomorrow.
