Mike Hesson says Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum is expected to return from a back injury in late January.

McCullum injured himself when he crashed into advertising hoardings in the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Christchurch, but is expected back in camp ahead of the Black Caps third and final ODI against Pakistan on January 31.

"I expect him back in camp on the 29th, at this stage that's what we're hopeful for," Hesson told Radio Sport today.

"Brendon's had plenty of rehab, he's got back into his boxing which he enjoys and it also helps from a strength perspective.

"So he's travelling well but it is one of those things that can flare up from time to time, but we're pretty confident that he'll be back with us on the 29th."

McCullum's return will be a big boost for the Black Caps who's ODI series against Australia begins on February 3 at Eden Park.

The Black Caps next play Pakistan in the Twenty20 series decider in Wellington tonight.
